Broadcast live from New York City’s Town Hall, America’s Town Meeting of the Air debuted on Thursday May 30, 1935, and only 18 of NBC’s affiliates carried it.  The topic for that first show was “Which Way America: Fascism, Communism, Socialism or Democracy?”  The moderator was George V. Denny Jr., executive director of the League for Political Education, which produced the program. Educate yourself!  We, as Americans, should know what our Constitution says, but unfortunately, most of us do not and our schools have stopped teaching it.  If reading the Constitution doesn’t appeal to you, first watch the below videos, presented by Michael Badnerik, 2004 Libertarian candidate for president of the United States.  These videos are very well done and make the subject of the Constitution and Bill of Rights very interesting.  After watching these videos, you’ll WANT to read the Constitution.

After World War I, with the advent of the League of Nations, many politiians fought the potential membership with the League, realizing that if our country were to join, millions of American boys would be required to fight foreign wars based on a pact with the League. 

World government continued to be a topic of conversation and in the years following World War I, the concept started to gain favor again…..and then came World War II and the United Nations.  After the war, the idea of world government lost favor again by many for fear of giving up national and individual sovereignty and liberties, and also for fear of communist infiltration.  Many politicians feared the same, but many still supported the idea of world government.  Due to public fears, the idea was swept under the rug and went underground. 

Those politicians and citizens who protested world government spoke their minds for a time, listing the many reasons why world government was not a good idea.  This went on for a few years, but then, even though the idea had been publically entertained for half a century, there were those who started labeling the world government protestors as conspiracy theororists…..even though it was obvious that our country was stepping closer and closer to globalization.

The idea started gaining favor again in the late 1940′s and early 1950′s, even promoting such events as “World Government Week” for school children.  Public school text books started focusing more emphasis on global citizenship than national pride.  Many parents took note, but the government stopped speaking outwardly about the matter.  To say that the government developed a plan to slowly ready the world for world government by focusing on the children would be called a conspiracy theory by our modern media and those who believe what they tell us.  People who say such things are called nut-jobs, conspiracy nuts, crack pots, etc.  So be it. 

The below link will take you to another page on this site which includes many links to historic newspaper articles that openly discuss, promote or condemn the idea of world government.  Read the articles for yourself.  They prove that the world government movement, whether it’s called “world government”, “one world government”, globalization” or the “New World Order”, is real and not a conspiracy theory. 

Some post-World War I articles refer to “The League of Nations” and some post-World War II articles refer to the “United Nations”, but I have tried to post articles for these eras that specifically refer to world government as a grander scheme than the mere membership or possible membership to one of these two organizations.

Todays gem dates back to 1954.

The Washington’s WTOP “Broadcast House” , which originally aired on February 10, 1954, gives us an insight to historical TV programming.  The show’s purpose was to introduce the public to WTOP’s new television studio and its crew.  (WTOP-TV is now WUSA-TV.)  Perhaps the show would be of particular interest to locals, but I found it quite interesting.  Throughout the show we are introduced to quite a few WTOP personalities of the day. 

We are first introduced to Marie McGrain, the head switchboard operator who mentions all of the wonderful men who have worked at WTOP in the past, including Arthur Godfrey, about whom she shared the following anecdote about his days on WTOP radio (1500 AM on the dial):

“Oh, the tricks he used to play on me down at the other studio…it was terrific…..He’d sneak out the door and he’d look out there and see me sitting at the switchboard drinking coffee and he’d go back and open up the microphone and say, ‘Folks, call Marie up!  She’s sitting out there doing nothing but drinking Tom O’Donnell’s coffee.’  Right away the board would light up like Pennsylvania Avenue…..asking for records to be played.”

Further reasearch on Marie McGrain, brought up the following three hits:

Washington D.C. radio guide, dated August 25, 1947:  “Marie McGrain, WTOP’s early morning telephone operator takes over for the vacationing “Uncle Bill” on Corn Squeezin’.  WTOP — 5:30 a. m.

Washington D.C. radio guide, dated September 12, 1947:  “Marie McGrain is victim of surprise party planned by WTOP staff members as she nears the end of vacation fill-in on Corn Squeezin’  WTOP — 7 a. m.”

Washington D.C. radio guide, dates September 16, 1947:  “Marie McGrain, veteran switchboard operator, appears on We the People.  WTOP — 9 p. m.

After the MC chats with Marie, we are taken to Studio 11 and Studio 13, where the news was broadcast.  We are introduced to weather man – Willie/Willy/Wooly/Woody Allen, (the name wasn’t quite clear) Donna Douglas (Jane of all trades), sports reporter – Maury Segal (I think) and news reporter – Don Richards.

We then move to studio 12 and meet Mark Evans, star of his own radio and TV shows.   A Google search uncovered a discussion that took place about WTOP’s early days, Mark Evans’ show, etc.  It can be read here.

Mark introduces us to Angela Baer/Bear/Bayer, his “very capable assistant who presides over the kitchen,” and Pick Temple, star of Pick Temple’s Ranch.  Further research on Pick Temple lead me to a site dedicated to remembering Washington DC’s old kiddie shows.  Six pages are devoted to Pick Temple, including photos, show history and even videos.  If you’re a fan of old TV & radio, you’ll love this site.

We then return to studio 11 and meet Roy Meachum, who, surprisingly is still around.  His recent columns can be read here.  Roy introduces us to Don Gaynor who gives us a sample of his weather forcast, Barry Berents (sp?) who gave us a sample of the news and Peter O’Reilly with a tidbit of sports.

Following introductions, we are entertained with a couple of songs and are introduced to more personalities, including Eric Sevareid!

Before the show closes, a giant aluminum globe is shown.  It’s explained the the aluminum globe, called the “Freedom Sphere,” is a time capsule.  As stated on the broadcast:

“In this aluminum sphere…manufactured to endure for 1,000 years, are preserved the documents, the sights and sounds of civic, public and business organizations of the nations capitol…”

This, in my opinion, was the most interesting part of the show.   ‘What happened to the time capsule?’ I wondered.  Well, as you can imagine, I researched it.  (I can’t help it!  I love to learn about the people and things who/that time has forgotten.)

The Freedom Sphere was opened in 1990, but unfortunately, most of the contents had been ruined by moisture–which is the only information I’ve been able to obtain thus far.

I’ve watched several episodes of Love That Bob in the last several days, and am surprised that I had never seen it before.  The show is funny, well-written, and for the 1950′s, “pushes the envelope.”  Fans of The Brady Bunch will instantly recall one of the stars of Love That Bob–namely, Ann B. Davis.  On The Brady Bunch Ann played the part of the maid to the busy Brady household, on Love That Bob, Ann was Bob’s secretary at his photography studio.  Another star of the show was Dwayne Hickman, who played Bob’s nephew and who later became the star of his own show, The Many Loves of Dobie Gillis.  Rosemary DeCamp played the part of Bob’s sister, and although the name probably doesn’t ring a bell to most youngsters these days, DeCamp had a 48-year career in show business, acting in films and TV shows.  She played Peg Riley in The Life of Riley on television, as well as Marlo Thomas’ mother in That Girl and as Aunt Helen on Petticoat Junction, (replaced Bea Benaderet–due to illness) just to name a few.

Another regular on the show will also be familiar to many TV fans: Nancy Kulp, who played the part of Pamela Livingstone on Love That Bob and the part of Jane Hathaway on The Beverly Hillbillies.  She also appeared a couple of times on The Jack Benny Show (TV) as the elocution teacher.

The episode that I watched today originally aired in 1958 and was entitled “Bob Butters Beck, Beck Butters Better.”  Costarring in the episode was Fred Beck, who played the part of a popular local disc jockey.  My question is this, (to anyone who may read this in the future and knows who in the heck Fred Beck was) “WHO WAS HE?”

I’ve googled his name and can’t seem to find anything other than a Fred Beck who experienced and reported a sighting of Bigfoot in the 50′s or 60′s, a Fred Beck who was one of the founding fathers for the Farmer’s Market and a third Fred Beck who was a baseball player for the Boston Doves, Cincinnati Reds and Philadelphia Phillies from 1909 to 1911 and later played with the minor leagues.  The baseball-playing Fred was born in 1886, which rules him out, as the Fred Beck in question was NOT 72 years old, by any means.

IMDB gives Beck credit for the Love That Bob part, along with only one other acting part–that of a taxi driver.  At the end of Love That Bob, the announcer states that Fred Beck appeared as himself.  Was he a popular disc jockey in California back in the 1950′s?  Perhaps he was a newspaper man?  Does anybody know?
